Choosing and Hanging a Pot

Live plant or artificial

For a live plant, choose a pot with drainage holes and a saucer, or a liner, so water can escape. For an artificial plant there is no watering, so drainage is not needed and any pot in the range will work.

Hang it securely

Fix the hook or bracket into a ceiling joist, beam, or wall stud rather than plasterboard alone, and use a fixing rated for more than the loaded weight. A live plant with wet soil is far heavier than the empty pot, so allow for that weight when choosing the fixing.

Size and material

Match the pot to the plant so the foliage is in proportion, with the pot around a third of the overall height as a guide. Use plastic or metal for exposed outdoor spots, and ceramic or macrame for sheltered indoor positions.
