A Colorbond Fence Became a Full Green Wall
A long Colorbond fence around a Madeley, Western Australia pool area was transformed with artificial greenery using a timber batten fixing system. The method provided a secure mounting surface without requiring screws to pass through the shared steel fence.
Designer Vertical Gardens used the Luxury Green Sensation Vertical Garden Green Wall Panel 1m x 1m for the installation. Treated timber battens were positioned along the fence, giving the panels regular fixing points while keeping the work on the installer’s side of the boundary.
The finished installation shows the result of the batten method in full, with the original Colorbond fence now covered by continuous artificial foliage along the pool boundary.

Project Location
Madeley, Western Australia
Application
Residential pool boundary and Colorbond fence
Products Used
Luxury Green Sensation Vertical Garden Green Wall Panel 1m x 1m
Installation Method
Treated timber battens with green wall panel fixing
Key Outcome
A continuous artificial green wall across a long Colorbond fence without fixing directly through the shared steel fence.
Before & After Transformation
Before
The original Colorbond fence formed a long steel boundary around the pool, with a narrow garden bed running along its base. The area provided a clear surface for the green wall, but the shared fence meant the fixing method needed careful planning.

The original fence left a long expanse of exposed steel around the pool. Creating a green wall here meant adding a separate fixing structure rather than sending screws through the shared Colorbond face.

The existing poolside garden was cleared, leaving an exposed fence line and open backdrop. This space was transformed with a lush green wall solution, creating a private, tropical setting that softens the hard boundaries and enhances the overall pool area.
After
The completed installation covers the steel fence with dense artificial foliage, giving the entire pool boundary a consistent green finish. The panels run across the fence as one connected surface, with the supporting timber structure hidden behind the foliage.

The completed green wall follows the full fence line, turning the original steel boundary into a continuous foliage screen while keeping the pool area open and easy to use.

The fence is cleared and prepared before the fixing structure is installed, giving the team a clean run for positioning the timber supports along the boundary.

The timber battens are spaced along the Colorbond fence to create fixing points for the panels, keeping the screws out of the shared steel face.

With the timber framework in place, the fence now has a separate mounting surface that allows the green wall panels to be secured from the installer’s side.

The first completed section shows how the joined panels sit over the batten structure, with the foliage covering the support and creating a continuous green surface.

The closer view shows the dense foliage filling the panel joins, demonstrating the finish achieved once the leaves are arranged after fixing.
What the Fence Needed
The main requirement was to install artificial greenery onto a shared Colorbond fence without fixing directly through the steel.
That distinction matters. A screw driven through the Colorbond face can continue into the neighbouring side of the fence, making the steel itself a poor fixing surface for this type of installation.
The answer was a timber batten structure. Treated timber was positioned along the fence at approximately 50cm intervals, creating a separate surface for securing the green wall panels.
The long fence run also made alignment important. The first row needed to be level, because even a small error becomes easier to see as the panels continue across the fence.
Design Direction
The installation needed to achieve several things at once.
-
Cover the exposed fence: Create dense foliage coverage across the long Colorbond surface
-
Keep the fixing neighbour-safe: Secure the panels to timber rather than through the shared steel
-
Provide regular support: Position battens at approximately 50cm intervals
-
Keep the first row level: Establish a straight starting point before moving across the fence
-
Keep panel joins tight: Connect adjoining panels so the foliage remains consistent
-
Suit outdoor conditions: Use a UV-rated panel suitable for direct outdoor exposure
-
Keep upkeep low: Avoid the watering, pruning and fertilising associated with live planting
How the Solution Came Together
The Luxury Green Sensation Vertical Garden Green Wall Panel 1m x 1m was selected for the project because its modular format works well across long fence runs.
Each panel measures 1m x 1m and covers approximately 1m². Panels can be joined using their interlocking connection points, then trimmed where required around edges and the final section.
For this installation, the outdoor specification was particularly relevant. The panel is UVTEX certified and SGS-tested to 5,000 hours of UV exposure, making it suitable for outdoor applications exposed to direct sun.
The panel is made from LDPE with integrated RealTex and UVTEX UV inhibitors within the leaf. It also requires no watering, pruning, trimming or fertilising.
How the Installation Was Achieved
What You’ll Need: Green Sensation panels, treated pine battens, self-drilling metal screws suitable for the fence rails, a staple gun or screws with washers, a spirit level, tape measure, drill and snips. Confirm the batten dimensions and fixing specifications before starting.
Step 1: Measure and Order
Measure the fence length and height in metres, then multiply them to calculate the area. Each Green Sensation panel covers 1m², so allow around 10% extra for trimming, corners and joins. The exact fence measurements and number of panels used on this project need to be confirmed.
Step 2: Clear the Fence Line
The old palms and garden bed were removed to give the team access along the fence and room to position the timber supports. With the fence line clear, the battens could be aligned along the full run.
Step 3: Fix the Timber Battens
Treated pine battens were positioned vertically at approximately 50cm intervals along the Colorbond fence. The battens create a separate fixing surface for the green wall panels, keeping the panel fixings away from the flat steel sheets. The precise batten dimensions and how they were secured to the fence rails or capping need to be confirmed before publication. Fixings must be suitable for the fence construction and must not protrude through the shared steel face into the neighbouring property.
Step 4: Start at One End and Level the First Panel
Position the first panel at the top corner of the fence and check it with a spirit level before fixing it in place. Getting this first section straight makes a real difference across a long fence run, where even a slight slope can become obvious as the panels continue along the boundary.
Step 5: Fix the Top Edge First
Secure the top edge of the panel to the timber battens using suitable staples or screws with washers, then work downwards to secure the remaining sections. Choose fixings that suit the panel and batten thickness, and check their length and placement to avoid penetrating the steel fence or reaching the neighbouring side.
Step 6: Join the Panels as You Go
Connect each new Green Sensation panel to the previous one using the panel’s interlocking connection points. Keep the foliage facing in a consistent direction and check the joins as you work, so the finished wall reads as one continuous green surface.
Step 7: Trim the Final Panel
Measure the remaining gap and trim the final panel along the mesh using suitable snips. Check the fit before securing the cut section to the battens.
Step 8: Fluff the Foliage
Once all the panels are fixed, ruffle and reposition the leaves around the joins and fixing points. This helps cover visible connections and gives the finished green wall a fuller, more consistent appearance.
The Result
The finished installation gives the pool boundary a completely different appearance, with dense artificial greenery covering the original Colorbond surface from one end of the run to the other.
Behind the foliage, the timber battens provide the fixing structure. From the pool side, the support disappears beneath the greenery, leaving a continuous green surface.
The installation also demonstrates a practical answer to a common Colorbond fence problem. Instead of treating the shared steel sheet as the fixing surface, the timber battens create a separate structure that keeps the work on the installer’s side.
Why Artificial Greenery Fits Colorbond Fences
Colorbond fences provide a strong, consistent boundary, but their large steel surfaces can also leave an area looking visually hard. Artificial green wall panels can cover that surface without requiring a new wall or a live planting system.
The modular 1m x 1m format makes the panels suitable for longer fence runs, with adjoining sections able to connect and individual panels able to be trimmed where necessary.
Outdoor exposure also makes panel specification important. The Green Sensation panel has UVTEX certification and an SGS-tested 5,000-hour UV rating for outdoor use.
There is also no watering, pruning, trimming or fertilising required. For a pool boundary, that means the greenery can remain in place without adding regular garden work to the area.
Practical Tips
-
Never screw through a shared Colorbond face: Use timber battens as the fixing surface so screws remain on the installer’s side
-
Keep battens around 50cm apart: This provides regular support without adding unnecessary timber across the fence
-
Use treated outdoor timber: Choose treated pine or another suitable outdoor-rated timber for exposure to Australian sun and rain
-
Start at one end: Get the first row level before continuing across the fence because an uneven starting point becomes increasingly visible on a long run
-
Join panels as you mount them: Keep seams tight and maintain the same foliage direction across adjoining sections
-
Fix the top edge first: Secure the top of each panel before working downwards so the panel stays controlled while the remaining fixings are added
-
Choose fixings for the site: Staples are quick on timber, while screws with washers can suit exposed or high-wind locations
-
Use UV-rated outdoor panels: Fence installations exposed to direct sun should use panels specifically rated for outdoor conditions
-
Ruffle the foliage after installation: Move the leaves over joins and around fixing points to create a fuller finished surface
-
Allow extra material: Measure the fence length and height in metres, calculate the area, then allow around 10% extra for trimming, corners and joins
Plan Your Residential Green Wall Consultation
Start by measuring the total fence length and height. Note any posts, gates, changes in level or sections that may require trimming.
For a shared Colorbond fence, the fixing structure should also be planned before the panels are ordered. The timber battens need to provide suitable fixing points while keeping screws away from the neighbouring side.
The Luxury Green Sensation Vertical Garden Green Wall Panel 1m x 1m covers approximately 1m² per panel, with 10% extra recommended for trimming, corners and joins.

No holes through the fence. Plenty of green on it. Turns out, the fence had room to grow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can artificial green wall panels be installed on a Colorbond fence?
Yes. A timber batten structure can be installed along the fence and used as the fixing surface for the green wall panels.
Why should I use timber battens on a shared Colorbond fence?
Timber battens provide a separate fixing surface, so screws can be secured to the timber instead of passing directly through the shared Colorbond sheet.
How far apart should the timber battens be?
Approximately 50cm spacing works well for this installation method. The final arrangement should suit the fence structure and site conditions.
Can I screw directly into the Colorbond fence?
Avoid doing so on a shared fence. A screw passing through the steel can reach the neighbouring side. Timber battens provide a separate surface for securing the green wall.
What type of timber should I use?
Use treated pine or another suitable outdoor-rated timber designed for exposure to sun and rain.
Is the Green Sensation panel suitable for outdoor fences?
Yes. The panel is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, has UVTEX certification and is SGS-tested to 5,000 hours of UV exposure.
How many Green Sensation panels do I need?
Measure the fence length and height in metres and multiply the two measurements to calculate the approximate area. Each panel covers approximately 1m². Around 10% extra is recommended for trimming, corners and joins.
Can the panels be cut to fit?
Yes. Panels can be trimmed along the mesh with suitable scissors or snips to fit the final section, corners and other areas that need adjustment.
Should I join the panels before fixing them?
Panels can be joined before or during mounting. Keeping the sections connected as the installation progresses helps maintain tight seams and consistent foliage direction.
Are staples suitable for fixing green wall panels to timber?
Staples can be used for timber-supported installations. Screws with suitable washers can provide additional support for exposed or high-wind locations.
Do the panels need watering or pruning?
No. The Green Sensation panels do not require watering, pruning, trimming or fertilising. Outdoor panels can be lightly rinsed when dust or debris builds up.
